Chapter 2
Shattered Reflections
Lightning split the sky as Emily and Tom trudged through the muddy forest path, branches whipping against their faces like angry fists. The damp earth clung to their boots, the smell of moss and decay blending with the acrid scent of smoke from a distant fire. Their breaths came in ragged gasps, the cold biting into their skin.
Tom stopped at a gnarled oak, its bark scarred and blackened. 'Here,' he said, voice barely above a whisper.
Emily knelt, fingers brushing against disturbed earth. Something metallic glinted beneath the soil. Heart pounding, she dug with trembling hands until a rusted tin box emerged, small but heavy, stained with age and secrets.
'Open it,' Tom urged.
Her fingers fumbled with the latch, a shiver running down her spine. Inside, a collection of letters, photographs, and a faded diary lay pressed together — fragments of a truth long buried but never forgotten.
The words on the diary’s first page struck her like a blow — confessions of betrayal, forbidden love, and the kind of obsession that destroys everything it touches.
A sudden snap echoed from deeper within the woods. Emily whipped around, heart in her throat. 'We're not alone.'
Tom swallowed hard. 'They don’t want this to see the light.'
A shadow emerged between the trees — a figure cloaked in darkness and rage. Emily’s pulse thundered in her ears as the past and present collided in a breathless moment of survival and shattered trust.
'Run,' Tom hissed, pulling her into the chase where only one truth awaited — exposure or annihilation.
