Echoes in the Dark

The rain hammered relentlessly against the cracked windowpane as Emily pressed her forehead against the cold glass, the city lights blurring in the storm. The sharp scent of wet earth and distant smoke clung to the air, mixing with the bitter taste of unease rising in her throat. She barely noticed the pounding at the door until a frantic voice called out, 'Emily, it's happening again! Please, you have to come!' She almost didn't move, heart drumming in her ears louder than the storm, but the desperation in his voice snapped her awake. Pulling on her coat, she slipped into the dark hallway, the musty scent of old wood and lost years filling her senses. 'Who is it?' she demanded, her voice cracking. 'It's Tom. The past... it's coming back.' Emily's fingers trembled as she opened the door to the cold night, the howling wind carrying whispered threats and shattered promises. The street was empty except for the shadows cast by flickering streetlights. Tom's eyes were wild, haunted. 'They found something in the forest,' he gasped, voice raw. 'Something we thought was buried forever.' The old weight in her chest settled in deeper, a crushing certainty that nothing would ever be the same again. 'Show me,' she whispered, stepping into the rain. 'Show me everything.' As they disappeared into the night, a distant scream cut through the tempest — raw, desperate, and unyielding. Emily gripped her coat tighter, the cold sea of fear crashing over her as the first piece of a dark puzzle slipped into place. "I never wanted to believe it," she muttered, "but now... the silence is screaming."
