Chapter 3
Shadows Over Neon
Darkness clung to the ruined rooftops where Arin met Kael, the enigmatic leader of the resistance. The city sprawled beneath them, a tapestry of flickering neon veins pumping secrets in its restless heart. ‘‘You’ve poked the hornet’s nest too deep, Arin,’’ Kael warned, voice low but edged with an urgency that made her skin crawl. ‘‘The Corp doesn’t just erase people; they twist realities, rewrite histories. Eiko’s disappearance... it’s worse than anything you imagined.’’ Arin’s eyes narrowed, the weight of betrayal pressing down like lead. ‘‘Then why hide the truth? Why silence every whisper of the past?’’ Kael’s gaze drifted to the shrouded skyline. ‘‘Because the truth fractures worlds. Because some betrayals run deeper than blood. You have to choose—protect what little you’ve left, or risk losing everything uncovering their final secret.’’ The wind bit cold against her exposed skin as a siren wailed in the distance, the streets below igniting in chaos. Suddenly, a mirrored figure emerged behind Kael—a woman with Arin’s eyes and an uncanny smile. ‘‘Surprise, sister,’’ she purred, stepping into the glow of neon and gunfire. ‘‘Did you think you knew your past? Or that your memories were yours to trust?’’ Time fractured, and Arin’s world tilted sideways. Her own reflection had become her deadliest enemy, and every step forward plunged her deeper into a maze where trust was the greatest illusion. ‘‘Choose wisely,’’ the double whispered, ‘‘because this city will devour us all if you falter.’’ The city’s neon heart flickered once more before plunging into suffocating darkness, leaving Arin alone with the ghosts she feared most—her own shattered truth.
