Chapter 2
Echoes in the Circuit
The narrow alleyways reeked of burnt ozone and rusted metal as Arin and Moss darted through the labyrinth of the undercity. ‘‘That was too close,’’ Moss murmured, scanning the flickering overhead conduits with his sharp eyes. ‘‘If they wanted you dead back there, they’d have finished the job.' Her pulse echoed the electric hum of the city's core around them. ‘‘It’s not just about us anymore. This conspiracy—whatever it is—it’s buried in the code, and someone ruthless wants to keep it secret.’’ Arin’s voice crackled with urgency. Fingers trembling, she interfaced her wrist rig with the nearest terminal; data streamed in cascades of blazing blue light, the hum of encrypted secrets layering over the city’s cacophony. ‘‘There’s a pattern here, ghosts within the circuit—people erased, memories wiped clean. But I found one name that keeps recurring.’’ Moss frowned. ‘‘And who’s that?’’ He asked, coming closer. ‘‘Eiko Sato. She’s disappeared from all archives except a few resistance files.’’ The tension thickened as digital ghosts whispered in their ears—voices of the erased calling out from the abyss. Each revelation pulled at Arin’s memory, fracturing what she thought she knew about her own past. ‘‘Eiko was close to something big before she vanished. Whoever she was digging for, it tied everything—the corporations, the government, and even the underground syndicates.’’ Moss’s eyes darkened. ‘‘Sounds like a powder keg waiting to explode. We get caught in this, we’re not just fighting ghosts but those who want us forgotten.’’ Suddenly, the screen went black, a cold voice crackling through the comms: ‘‘You’re playing a dangerous game, Voss. Stop digging, or the city will consume you.’’ Arin’s jaw clenched. ‘‘No one forces my hand. The Neon Veil’s secrets won’t stay buried.’’ Behind them, the murmur of digital footsteps grew louder, closing in. As the city’s pulse quickened, Arin faced the chilling truth—some betrayals can’t be undone, and some choices could shatter everything she holds dear.
