Veil of Deception

Laser beams cut through the darkness like shards of glass as Maya ducked behind the rusted console, breath ragged and hands trembling. The safehouse was no longer a refuge; it was a trap. "They've compromised us," Gideon growled, rushing to the terminal, fingers flying over holographic keys. "I’m severing their access—but it’ll buy us mere minutes." Maya's gaze flicked to the shattered window, where silhouette after silhouette of guards flooded the alleys outside. Her mind screamed with mounting questions—who had betrayed them? Was Gideon truly an ally, or another pawn in the Corp’s twisted game? A sudden cold presence appeared behind her. "Surprised to see me?" The voice was silky, laced with menace. Jenna—the Corp’s enforcer, and the ghost from Maya’s darkest memories. Before Maya could react, Jenna’s hand was on her wrist, pain flaring as a neural disruptor briefly stunned her. "You’ve been dancing on strings you didn’t even see," Jenna whispered, eyes gleaming like a predator’s. "But now, the real game begins." Gideon's defiant shout echoed as he launched a counterattack through the network, but the power surged, and the facility began to collapse around them. Alarms merged with the groan of crumbling metal. Maya’s heart plunged. Trust shattered like glass; survival now demanded impossible choices—betray a friend to save herself, or risk everything for the fragile hope of redemption. As the world around her turned to ruin, one question burned hotter than the fires consuming the safehouse: Who can she trust when every memory might be a lie? [End of Chapter 3]
