The sterile white walls of the safehouse felt claustrophobic despite the open sky visible through the cracked ceiling. Maya sat, trembling, the shard’s cold weight burning in her hands as Gideon paced, restless and grim. "They’re closing in," he muttered, eyes darting to the reinforced door. Outside, the city throbbed with a lifeblood of secrets—each neon pulse a possible threat. Maya swallowed hard, the blurred edges of fragmented memories sharpening. Faces she’d never known yet felt aching familiarity with flickered in her mind’s eye. "I don’t understand," she whispered. "Why was I targeted? What does the Corp want?" "Control," Gideon replied, voice low. "Not just of data, but of people’s minds. Memories aren’t just memories anymore—they’re weapons. And you’re their most dangerous catalyst." He knelt, producing a worn photo; a woman whose eyes mirrored Maya’s own, fractured and defiant. "This is your mother. She disappeared chasing a similar truth." Maya’s breath hitched. The shard’s glow intensified, casting eerie shadows across the room. Suddenly, alarms blared—piercing, unyielding. The Corp’s mercenaries had found them. "We need to move. Now," Gideon commanded. As they scrambled through hidden passages beneath the city, Maya’s resolve hardened. The truth would not stay buried. But with betrayal lurking at every corner and enemies everywhere, survival was no longer certain. The cold air of the underground tunnels welcomed them, but the deeper they went, the heavier the silence grew—pregnant with secrets waiting to unravel. Would Maya's fractured past finally catch up, or could she forge a future from the shards of memory and trust? [End of Chapter 2]
