Chapter 2
Secrets in the Shadows
The stranger’s name was Lucas, his gaze intense beneath the brim of a soaked hat. Emma’s cottage felt smaller, heavier with the weight of his words. "Daniel’s been hiding more than you know," Lucas murmured, urgency threading his voice. Emma’s fingers tightened around the frayed fabric of her coat. "Why come to me?" she challenged, her voice barely above a whisper. Lucas stepped closer, the scent of rain and pine weaving between them. "Because you deserve the truth—and because it’s not just Daniel’s secret. It’s mine too." Thunder rumbled, echoing the storm outside, as Emma fought against the rising tide of fear and hope. "Show me," she demanded, but Lucas hesitated. "First, you need to trust me." The storm’s fury battered the windows, the willow swaying violently. Suddenly, a loud crash came from the attic. Emma’s heart leapt. "What was that?" she asked, eyes wide. Lucas exchanged a glance with her, tension crackling between them. "We’re not alone." Emma’s breath caught as footsteps echoed above. The darkness seemed to close in, secrets lurking just out of sight. She reached for Lucas’s hand, the electricity between them undeniable despite the chaos. As the attic door creaked open, a shadow emerged—one that held the key to betrayal, love, and survival. They froze, breath mingling in the charged air. Who had crossed the threshold into their fragile sanctuary? The answer would shatter everything Emma believed.
