The cold pressed against her skin as Lila stumbled through the thick underbrush, the whispers coiling tighter around her mind. She tasted the bitter tang of fear, sharp and raw. "You can't run from this," a voice hissed, close and cruel. Her mind scrambled for logic, for sense — but the woods distorted time, space, swallowed her hopes and promises. Each breath was a ragged gasp, each step a battle against the creeping dread. The air was thick with decay and something else — old magic, foul and hungry. A flicker of movement caught her eye and she froze. A figure emerged from the gloom, tall and ragged with eyes like broken glass. "Why do you wander here, child?" it asked, voice a rasp of dry leaves. Lila's answered with trembling lips, "I’m looking for the truth about my brother." The figure's smile was a slash of darkness. "The forest knows your blood. It’s thirsty." Suddenly, the ground beneath her cracked open, revealing ancient bones and forgotten secrets. The forest's breath was on her face now — hot, raw, and full of menace. Lila's scream was swallowed, her fate sealed in the cold embrace of the hollow pines.
