Chapter 2
Echoes of Lies
Elara sat stiffly across the dimly lit café, stirring her coffee but tasting nothing. Across from her, the man—Liam—studied her with an intensity that made her heart gallop and her skin prickle with unease. "Why now? Why tell me this after all these years?" she demanded, voice trembling but fierce. Liam's jaw clenched. "I never meant to hurt you. The lies were to protect you—both of us." The melodic clatter of cups and murmurs of strangers felt miles away as the weight of betrayal settled between them. Elara’s fingers clenched the ceramic mug, knuckles white. "Protection doesn’t feel like this," she whispered, tears pricking the corners of her eyes. Across the table, Liam reached out, hesitating before his fingers brushed a stray lock of hair from her face. "There's more you need to know. But saying it changes everything." Lightning flashed, illuminating the turmoil in his gaze—and the impossible choice Elara must make.
