Whispers Behind Closed Doors

The cramped café smelled of rich coffee and weary desperation as Lila sat nursing her trembling hands wrapped around a steaming mug. Across from her, the mysterious man — whose name she now knew was Damien — traced patterns on the worn tabletop, his jaw clenched tight. “Why now?” Lila demanded, voice barely above a whisper. “After all this time, why come back?” Damien looked away, the pain flickering in his eyes like candlelight before the storm. “Some wounds never heal, but some truths can’t stay buried.” Their conversation was broken by the sharp ring of Lila’s phone. A cryptic message blinked on the screen: *We know what you did. Stop or suffer the consequences.* Her pulse quickened. “They’re watching me, Damien. From my past… from your world.” He reached across the table, fingers intertwining with hers, grounding her. “We’ll face them together. But you need to trust me. No more secrets.” Outside, rain began to patter against the windowpane, each drop a reminder of time slipping away. The cozy café which had felt like a safe haven now seemed suffocating, as if the shadows were closing in. A sudden crash echoed from the kitchen. They both froze. “Who’s there?” Damien called, voice low and dangerous. Before an answer could come, the lights flickered and went out, plunging them into darkness. Panic surged as distant footsteps approached, slow and deliberate. Lila’s heart hammered painfully against her ribs; her breath hitched. Damien’s arm tightened around her, a silent vow to protect. The door creaked open... But the visitor was not who they expected.
