Chapter 1
Shadows at Midnight
Mara Blake’s breath hitched as the dim light flickered across the ancient hourglass. The cold air bit into her skin in the abandoned mansion’s library. "This isn’t just time slipping away," she whispered, her eyes scanning over the cryptic symbols etched in silver on the glass. "Someone wants to erase more than memories tonight."
Her partner, Jonah, shifted uneasily. "The disappearance of Victor Cross is thickening. Every clue feels like a twisted thread in a tangled web."
Suddenly, a faint creak echoed down the hall like a ghostly warning. Mara’s heart slammed against her ribs as she reached for her flashlight. "Stay sharp. We’re not alone in here."
Outside, the wind howled like a warning, swirling dead leaves against the cracked windows. The scent of damp wood and forgotten secrets filled the room. Mara’s fingers trembled, recalling the desperate eyes of the last visitor before Victor vanished — filled with fear and betrayal.
"If we don’t find him soon, everything unravels," she muttered, voice tight with urgency. "But what if the answer is buried in the past?"
Jonah’s radio crackled, breaking the silence with another dead end report. Mara’s pulse surged. Time was bleeding out — and with it, the fragile thread holding the case together. She took a deep breath and stepped into the shadowed corridor, the hourglass’s sands slipping faster than ever.
The library door slammed shut behind her, the sound echoing like a thunderclap in the stillness. Mara froze — and then the whispered voice broke through the dark: "You should have left the past alone..."
