Chapter 1
Fractures in the Dark
The rain hammered against the cracked window, each drop a sharp drumbeat in the silence of the room. Maya’s breath hitched as the shadows danced on the peeling wallpaper, flickering like memories she wished she could forget. The phone vibrated relentlessly on the worn wooden table. She hesitated, fingers trembling, the cold seeping into her skin. The voice on the other end was distorted but clear enough to freeze her blood: “They know. Get out… now.” Maya threw open the door just as footsteps thundered down the hall, heavy and deliberate. Her pulse surged. Every instinct screamed run, but where was safe? Outside, the storm raged as if the heavens themselves were at war. Tripping over debris, she made for the stairs, heart pounding as cold sweat trickled down her temple. Who betrayed her? And why was the past finally catching up? The screech of boots grew louder, closer—then silence. Just before the door slammed shut behind her, a whisper chased her into the night: “Trust no one.”
