Chapter 2
The Stolen Code
Mara's apartment was a stark contrast to the cold streets; a small sanctuary filled with maps, encrypted files, and a blinking laptop. Every corner screamed urgency. "We’ve got a problem," her contact said through the cracked speaker. "The code you found, it’s a key—one that unlocks everything, from hidden accounts to government secrets." Mara’s eyes narrowed, fingers flying over the keyboard. "If it falls into the wrong hands…" her voice trailed off. The city outside was restless, a symphony of distant sirens and muffled voices. "I don’t trust anyone anymore," she muttered, glancing at a photo pinned on her wall, faded but powerful—a man’s face, half obscured by shadows. As the rain pattered against the window, a sudden knock shattered the silence. Her heart leaped. "Mara, open up!" The voice was unfamiliar, sinister. Hesitating for a breath, she edged towards the door, every sense alert. What waited beyond was a betrayal she had never seen coming.
