Chapter 2
Betrayal Beneath Blood Red Skies
Kaela pressed her back against the jagged stones of the secluded cave, the acrid scent of smoke still heavy in the air. Her throat was dry, her limbs trembling from the relentless flight. "Why did you save me?" she demanded, voice harsh despite the exhaustion. The stranger glanced sideways, sharp eyes hidden beneath a tangle of raven hair.
"Because your fire could be the downfall of us all," he whispered, tension crackling between them like static. "And because I need you alive—for now."
Her brows knitted in confusion and suspicion. "Who are you?"
"Call me Eiric. Once a knight of the Ember Court. Now, a man hunted by ghosts." His words hung heavy, laden with secrets that gnawed like shadows at Kaela’s resolve.
Outside, the sky bled crimson, clouds swirling in a violent tempest as distant war horns shattered the eerie calm. "They are coming," Eiric said grimly, his hand tightening around a strange, ancient blade inscribed with runes that flickered faintly. "The empire knows you’ve returned. And their hunt will not cease until you are dead."
Kaela’s mind raced, memories of exile and betrayal flashing like lightning across her consciousness. "Then I must find the Cinderstone before they do," she vowed, fingers trembling as they brushed against an old pendant—her last link to a forgotten power.
Suddenly, a chilling howl echoed from the cliffs, followed by the sound of snapping twigs. Kaela spun, light from her conjured fire throwing long shadows in the cave’s depths. From the darkness, a figure stepped forward—a woman crowned in frost, eyes glinting with icy malice.
"Kaela. You cannot escape your destiny," she snarled. "The Ember Queen’s throne is stained with blood, and your time is over."
Eiric stepped protectively in front of Kaela, raising his blade. "Not while I draw breath."
The air thickened with impending violence, the storm outside intensifying. Choices loomed, alliances shattered, and Kaela faced the bitter truth: trust was a weapon as dangerous as fire itself.
