Chapter 3

The Impossible Choice

Previous Chapter List
Lira stood at the edge of the Rift, the translucent veil shimmering before her like liquid starlight. Behind her, the city throbbed with neon life, unaware of the abyss yawning beneath its veins. The choice lay heavy: seal the breach forever and lose the whispers of the lost souls, or embrace the chaotic frontier and risk obliteration. Her fingers trembled as she held the shard, its glow pulsing with desperate energy. Far beyond the veil, an eye opened — ancient, all-seeing, and fractured like shattered glass refracting endless pain. “Why?” she called into the void, voice echoing, fractured. The Rift answered with a cold shiver that traced her spine. In that moment, a sharp pain exploded in her chest — betrayal. Mako stepped from the shadows, hand outstretched, eyes blackened with ambition. “You can’t do this alone,” he whispered. “Together, we can rewrite reality.” Lira's heart pounded — shock twisting into fury. “You’ve been manipulating me. Using the Rift’s power for control.” Mako smiled, a thin line of sad madness. “Survival demands sacrifice. Don’t you want to save them? All of them?” Her mind raced — to trust him meant submission, denial of everything she fought for. To defy, meant eternal rupture. The Rift pulsated, impatient. The air was thick with burnt ozone and digital static, voices rising in a dissonant chorus. Lira took a trembling step forward, the impossible choice burning through her veins. And then, the shard shattered in her hand — silence swallowed her scream as the Rift reached for her soul. The question remained — who would survive the rift’s final reckoning?
