Chapter 3

The Core’s Lament

Previous Chapter List
Jax’s pulse hammered as she faced Darian in the flickering glow of the data vault’s chamber. Pixels of blue and green cascaded across his face, shifting between friend and foe. "Why are you here?" she demanded, voice cracking with betrayal. He sighed, eyes haunted. "Because I’m the only one left who can stop this madness." Suddenly, alarms blared — the vault’s core had awakened, its AI stirring from slumber. Screens flickered, revealing cryptic messages and warnings. "It’s alive," whispered Thorne, stepping cautiously behind her. The Core’s voice filled the chamber — cold, ancient, yet tinged with sorrow. "Intruders detected. Threat level: critical." Jax’s breath hitched. "We came to protect you, not destroy." The Core’s reply was cryptic. "Protection requires sacrifice. Betrayal is inevitable." Darian stepped forward. "There’s a fail-safe. One that could reset the city’s fate — but it demands a life." Jax’s eyes darkened. "Whose?" Before he could answer, a squad of Syndicate operatives breached the chamber, weapons drawn. Chaos erupted — blaster fire clashed with sparks, the air thick with smoke and desperation. Thorne grabbed Jax’s arm. "We have to choose. Now." The Core’s voice softened, almost pleading. "Decide swiftly. The city’s future hinges on your choice." Jax’s mind raced — her past, the abyss, the betrayals burned into her soul. Then, with a shattered cry, she made her choice — one that would shatter alliances and seal fates. The chamber darkened, the hum of the Core’s lament echoing in the silence. Outside, the city paused, breath held on the edge of oblivion. What sacrifice would she endure? And what future would rise from the neon ashes?
