Chapter 2

Fractured Trust

Eliza’s hands shook as she dialed the number again, desperate for an answer, a lifeline. The line clicked—then silence. "Hello?" a voice cracked over the speaker. It was David, her brother. "I got your message. Meet me at the old pier. We need to talk." The scent of rain soaked into her coat as she stepped outside, streetlights flickering like ghosts. Each step toward the pier echoed the crack in her heart, the growing void of trust. David paced, his jaw clenched, eyes dark pools of unshed anger. "Mom’s been lying to us," he spat, voice low. "All these years, and we never knew." Eliza bit her lip, the weight of betrayal settling like lead. "Why now? Why tell us this?" "Because they’re coming back," he said, glancing over his shoulder. "The past doesn’t stay buried forever." A cold wind whipped through the docks, tearing at their words and dragging secrets beneath the waves. The scent of salt and decay filled the air, mingling with the sharp sting of fear. "I thought we were safe here," Eliza whispered. "No one’s safe," David answered, lips tight. "Not with them around." Suddenly, footsteps echoed behind them, slow and deliberate. They spun around, breath caught, as a shadow detached itself from the fog. "You shouldn’t have come," the figure said, voice like gravel. Eliza’s heart slammed against her ribs. The past had arrived, and with it, impossible choices. The night swallowed their cries.
